Stoneygate School joins Leicester Grammar School Trust
Co-educational day school Stoneygate, Great Glen, became part of the Leicester Grammar School Trust’s family of schools in May this year. The move began an exciting new phase in the life of a school that was originally founded in 1856 and that has always been one of Leicestershire’s most respected and well-regarded prep schools. Stoneygate offers a distinctive prep school education with small class sizes, committed teachers and a wide range of extra-curricular activities. It educates holistically, developing each individual pupil to their maximum potential.
Stoneygate welcomes pupils with a broad range of abilities and aims to give each child a well-rounded education, blending notable academic achievement with excellence in each child’s individually discovered talents.
From September 2017, Stoneygate will offer pupils the chance to stay for GCSE study until the age of 16. Pupils will be offered a distinctive choice of subjects based around the traditional core subjects, but embracing the arts, sciences and practical subjects. They will also benefit from an enrichment programme based on 3 core units; Skills, Leadership and Voluntary.
Headmaster, John Dobson explains "American journalist, Sydney Harris, said “Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to stay the same but get better.” I like this oxymoron and I think it applies to Stoneygate School. There are certain things I don’t want to change, but there are areas we do need to get better. Some changes have already begun… I want Stoneygate to be a traditional, modern prep school. Another oxymoron. Modernisation has already begun - the Trust invested heavily this summer in improving the electrics in the old building, the cabling in the IT room, the introduction of inter-active whiteboards; we’ve even begun the modernisation of the kitchen…but we’ve retained the Aga!”
